The Redwood Gigantea Archive
About this archive
A permanent, self-contained record of the Gigantea's online journalism. It does not depend on WordPress, a database, or the original web server.
Collections
Each publication year is preserved as a separate collection and added to the archive once it has been captured and verified. Every article keeps the web address it had on redwoodgigantea.com.
| Collection | Articles | Photos lost | Captured |

How it was made
Articles were copied from the public WordPress interface of redwoodgigantea.com, read-only and without a login, and each article's public page was saved as a second witness. Every source address, archived file and checksum is recorded in an extraction manifest. Photographs are kept as the original files. Where an original is very large, the page shows a smaller display copy and links to the untouched original. Search is built with Pagefind and runs entirely inside this archive.
Editorial conventions
- Bylines show the WordPress author of each post. Where the article text carries its own byline, that text is preserved as written.
- Sections follow the newspaper's original categories. The administrative "archives" category and categories named after staff members are kept in the data but left out of section navigation. Articles with no other category appear under “Not assigned to a section.”
- Embedded social media posts were hosted by other companies and are not preserved. A link to the original post is kept.
- Later edits. The archive holds each article as it was live at capture time. An article's “Archive record” notes the last edit date when the article was changed after publication.
- Reader comments (34 public comments across all collections) are preserved in the archive's data but are not displayed.
Photographs that could not be preserved
Some photographs no longer exist anywhere we could find. They had been removed from the website's media library, or they were linked from Google Docs and those links have since expired. The Internet Archive's Wayback Machine was searched as well. Where a photo is missing, its article shows “Photograph not preserved” in its place and keeps the original caption. No substitute photographs have been used.
If you have original copies of any of these photographs, the newspaper would like to hear from you.
2018: 37 photographs in 29 articles
Bylines that differ from the article text
In these articles, the byline typed into the story names different or additional writers than the WordPress author shown in the header. Both are preserved.
